Minneapolis Third Precinct Police Station Will Reopen Down the Street from Burned Location

November 4, 2023

After much controversy and community debate, the Minneapolis Third Precinct Police Station will reopen about a half mile from the spot that was burned down during the uprising following the murder of George Floyd in 2020. The station’s new location will be at 2633 Minnehaha Avenue.

Earlier this week, the Minneapolis City Council voted 8-5 in favor of the new location.

The project will cost an estimated $14 million, and around an additional $8 million to add a community safety center as outlined in a council resolution.

"It's a big victory for our city, but also for the residents of the Third Precinct, who have been calling out for safety," Mayor Jacob Frey stated at the conclusion of the council’s vote, "Obviously, we wanted it to be sooner."

However, not all community members agree with Frey. Many neighbors have pointed out the Minneapolis Police Department’s history of racial violence and have been vocal about not wanting the Third Precinct rebuilt at all.

Voted in favor:

Andrea Jenkins (President), Linea Palmisano (VP), Lisa Goodman, Andrew Johnson, Emily Koski, Jamal Osman, Michael Rainville and LaTrisha Vetaw.

Voted against:

Jason Chavez, Aisha Chughtai, Jeremiah Ellison, Elliott Payne, and Robin Wonsley
