Florida State Attorney Claims “Insufficient Evidence” to Charge Susan Lorincz With Murder of Ajike Owens

Earlier today, Florida State Attorney William Gladson announced in a press release that prosecutors have “insufficient evidence” to charge Susan Lorincz with murder in the death of Ajike Owens.

On June 2nd Owens knocked on her neighbor, Lorincz’s, door to retrieve a lost iPad belonging to her children—the location of which pinged as being in Lorincz’s house. The neighbors exchanged words until Lorincz shot through the door, killing Owens.

In a press release, Gladson stated, “In making the filing decision on this case, my office carefully examined the viability of both second degree murder and manslaughter with a firearm, both first degree felonies. In order to prove the crime of second degree murder, the State must prove beyond and to the exclusion of every reasonable doubt, the existence of a depraved mind toward the victim at the time of the killing. Depraved mind requires evidence of hatred, spite, ill will or evil intent toward the victim at the time of the killing. As deplorable as the defendant’s actions were in this case, there is insufficient evidence to prove this specific and required element of second degree murder.”

Lorincz has been charged with manslaughter with a firearm, as well as assault.
