Boston Votes to Lower the Voting Age to 16 Years Old in Municipal Elections
12/6/2022
Boston City Council voted 9-4 in favor of allowing 16 and 17 year olds to participate in local elections.
The measure will now need to pass a vote in the legislature to become official.
If passed, Boston would join a handful of cities throughout the US giving youth the power to participate in the political system. Several cities in Maryland have lowered the voting age to 16 for local elections, and both Berkeley and Oakland in California allow 16 year olds to vote in school board elections.
Proponents of the measure have expressed that 16 year olds can legally work and, as tax payers, should be able to cast their vote.
What do you think? At what age should people be allowed to vote? Should lowering the voting age be considered for national elections?
