A Florida Bill Could Fine Bloggers Who Write About Governor DeSantis and Other Elected Officials
A Florida bill introduced by GOP Senator Jason Brodeur would make it illegal for bloggers to write about Gov. Ron DeSantis and other “elected state officials,” without first registering with the state.
In registering, the blogger “must include [the] individual or entity that compensated the blogger for the blog post.” They must also note “the amount of compensation received from the individual or entity."
The fine for failure to register would be $25 a day the post is published, up to $2,500 per post.
According to the legislation, online newspapers (and newspaper-style publications) would be exempt.
The bill is titled “Information Dissemination.” Opponents have criticized the bill as a violation of free speech and an attack on journalists.
