The Family of Tyre Nichols Sues City of Memphis
On Wednesday, the family of Tyre Nichols, who was beaten to death by Memphis police during a traffic stop in January, announced they are suing the Memphis Police Department and the officers responsible for Nichols’ death.
“It’s my turn to make sure that my son’s death does not go in vain,” Nichols’ mother, RowVaughn Wells stated at a press conference announcing the suit.
“This has nothing to do with the monetary value of the lawsuit, but everything to do with accountability. Those five police officers murdered my son. They beat him to death and they need to be held accountable.”
According to the lawsuit, the Scorpion Unit, a now-disbanded special unit that the officers who attacked Nichols were members of, “disproportionately focused on and targeted young Black men.”
Since Nichols’ death, the Department of Justice has launched a probe into the practices of the Memphis Police Department.
Nichols’ family is suing the city and the officers for a combined $55 million.
