Police Fatally Shoot Double Amputee in California

Anthony Lowe, a double amputee and wheelchair user, was killed by police in Huntington Park, California last week.

The encounter occurred after 36 year old Lowe was approached by police responding to a stabbing. Parts of the incident were caught on cell phone video.

When police approached Lowe he, allegedly, ignored their commands. Police tased him twice. Lowe got out of his wheelchair and attempted to get away from the police.

Police claim Lowe had a knife in his hand and, when he attempted to get away (hobbling on the stumps of his legs), he was shot approximately 10 times. Lowe was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Let’s call it what it is. It’s a straight murder," Lowe’s family attorney, Christian Contreras stated, “A disabled man, double amputee, murdered by the police department officers, and we’re here making demands. We’re not making requests. We’re making demands."

Friends and family of Lowe have questioned just how much of a threat he could have posed to the multiple police officers who were present. A sizable lawsuit is expected given the facts.

Lowe's family and attorney are calling for body and dash cam footage to be released in their entirety and the names of the officers involved to be made public.

Lowe leaves behind two children. He was scheduled to be fitted for prosthetics later this month.
