Airbnb Bans “Slave Cabin” Listings
@airbnb has officially banned the listing of “slave cabins.” The company released an anti-discrimination report earlier this month which states that it will ban the listing of any plantation residences “if structures that existed during the time of slavery are still present on the property.”
Additionally, properties built for the purpose of housing enslaved people will not be listed and renters are no longer allowed to promote “slavery-related features” on listings.
The company was called out for listing “slave cabins” in 2019 by @colorofchange and over the summer they were criticized again when a TikToker called them out on the inappropriate listings.
Some educational and historical listings having to do with the history of slavery will remain on the rental site.
Now (hopefully) Airbnb can work on finding ways to rectify the fact that, in many communities, long-term Black, brown, and low income renters are being displaced in favor of short-term rentals.
Has @airbnb done enough to right this wrong?
