Ex-Cop Amber Guyger Denied Parole for the 2018 Murder of Botham Jean
DALLAS—
Ex-Dallas police officer Amber Guyger has been denied parole after serving 5 years in prison for the 2018 murder of Botham Jean.
Guyger shot and killed Jean in his apartment home after allegedly mistaking his apartment door for her own. She was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Guyger appealed to overturn the conviction, but was denied.
Guyger recently came up for parole, on what would have been Jean’s 33rd birthday, and was denied. She will not be eligible for parole again until October 2026.
“My family feels a sense of relief having gone through the process and made a strong petition for denial,” insisted Botham’s mother, Alison Jean. “So news coming in that the board considered our petition is a sense of elation, a sense of relief.”
“She needs to serve her entire 10-year term, which is well below a sentence that one receives for murder,” Alison Jean said in a CBS interview. “Murder of an innocent man in the comfort of his home, doing nothing wrong.”
The legal team for Jean’s family released the following statement after Guyger was denied parole, “The family of Botham Jean is relieved by today’s decision to deny parole to former Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger. This is one very important component of justice for them for the senseless death of their brother and son while he was unarmed and minding his own business in his own home.”
Born and raised in St. Lucia, Jean— who was affectionately known as ‘Bo’— was an accountant. He was an avid singer and extremely active in his local church.
