Former San Antonio Cop Who Gave an Unhoused Man a Dog-Feces Sandwich is Working as a Police Officer Again

12/14/2022

Former San Antonio cop, Matthew Luckhurst made headlines in 2016 after he was terminated for giving an unhoused man a sandwich filled with dog feces while on duty.

In 2019 he was rehired to SAPD due to a legal loophole. However, he was then indefinitely suspended after he left feces in the toilet of the women’s restroom at the city’s bike patrol headquarters, and smeared an unidentified brown substance all over the seat.

Luckhurst’s story doesn’t end there. Five months after his final SAPD firing, he was hired by the Floresville Police Department (about a half hour SE of San Antonio) where he has been working as an officer ever since.

Luckhurst’s most recent position leads police oversight groups to question Texas’ licensing policies. How did this happen? Why aren’t there more checks and balances?
