Gulf of Mexico is now officially Gulf of America, says Trump administration

The Trump administration’s Department of Interior has announced the Gulf of Mexico is now officially the Gulf of America. In addition to this change, the Alaskan peak Denali has been renamed to Mount McKinley. Both name changes were part of a deluge of executive orders Trump signed during his first day in office.

However, not everyone is behind the moniker adjustments. The Associated Press has already stated that it will not honor the Gulf of America name change, as it only applies in the U.S. and the AP covers international news.

“The Gulf of Mexico has carried that name for more than 400 years,” a representative for the AP said in a press statement. “The Associated Press will refer to it by its original name while acknowledging the new name Trump has chosen.”

That being said, the media company will refer to Denali as Mount McKinley going forward, per Trump’s decry. The peak had previously been called Mount McKinley until 1975, when Alaskan Governor Jay S. Hammond requested the name be changed to Denali, meaning ‘tall,’ in honor of the Indigenous people of that region, the Koyukon. Former President Obama made the change official in 2015.

“These changes reaffirm the Nation’s commitment to preserving the extraordinary heritage of the United States and ensuring that future generations of Americans celebrate the legacy of its heroes and historic assets,” the new Department of Interior claims.
