City of Minneapolis Wants More Time to Fill Police Oversight Role

MINNEAPOLIS—The City of Minneapolis and the Minnesota Department of Human Rights (MDHR) have asked for an extension to fill the role of independent evaluator stipulated by the city’s consent decree.

According to KSTP, the city and MDHR are supposed to fill an independent evaluator role by November as outlined in the settlement agreement. But the parties have asked for an extension which will give them until March of next year to hire for the position.

The settlement comes from a multi-year state investigation which uncovered patterns of racial discrimination by the Minneapolis Police Department. The Department of Justice conducted an investigation with similar findings as well, but has not yet formed a consent decree.

The independent evaluator would be responsible for the oversight of both consent decrees. Additionally, before a firm is hired, the city, along with MDHR, has committed to holding public meetings where community members will have the opportunity to get to know the finalists and learn more about their policies and practices.
