Ilhan Omar Wins Congressional Primary Despite AIPAC Push to Oust Her

Ilhan Omar wins Congressional Primary in Minnesota’s 5th District against Don Samuels, despite strategic push from AIPAC and pro-Israel donors to oust her.

Earning 56.2% of the votes as of 10pm today, with nearly 99% of the total votes counted, Omar has broken the Squad’s losing streak.

Earlier this election season, fellow Squad members Rep. Jamaal Bowman, of New York, and Rep. Cori Bush, of Missouri both lost their Congressional primaries thanks to AIPAC and pro-Israel donors purposely backing candidates who have spoken in favor of Israel.

Meanwhile, the Squad has consistently been united in its demands to free Palestine and end the genocide in Gaza.

Omar supporters were particularly concerned about this election as Minnesota’s Primary is “open” and anyone can vote for a candidate regardless of party affiliation. For weeks, pro-Israel donor messaging has urged Democrats and Republicans alike to vote for Omar’s opponent Samuels.

In 2022, Omar beat Samuels in the Congressional primary by only 2% points, so the stakes were already high going into 2024.

After several notable defeats nationwide, supporters are hopeful that Omar’s victory will be the first of many for Squad members looking to secure their positions.
