International Court of Justice Rules Israel’s Occupation of Palestine Is Illegal

HAGUE— The International Court of Justice, also known as the World Court, has ruled that Israel’s ongoing occupation of Palestinian territories and settlements is illegal. The Court stipulated that Israel must withdraw from Palestine as soon as possible.

Although the decision is unbinding and cannot legally be enforced, it will likely result in less international support for Israel. It may also pave the way for future sanctions against Israel.

According to the ruling, "Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and the regime associated with them, have been established and are being maintained in violation of international law." Additionally, the court called for restitution and “the evacuation of all settlers from existing settlements".

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas embraced the ICJ’s ruling, calling it "a victory for justice."

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu does not appear to share President Abbas’ sentiment. "The Jewish nation cannot be an occupier in its own land," read a statement released by Netanyahu’s office immediately following the Court’s decision. In the statement, he went on to call the ruling, “fundamentally wrong.”

As far as next steps are concerned, the court recommended that the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council work together to take additional action in ensuring an end to Israel’s war on Palestine.
