18 Year Old Jaylen Smith Becomes Youngest Black Mayor Elected in the US
12/7/2022
Congratulations to 18 year old Jaylen Smith who was elected as the new mayor of Earle, Arkansas last night!
Smith, who recently graduated high school, beat Nemi Matthews Sr., 218 votes to 139 votes, in a runoff election yesterday.
Smith becomes the youngest Black US mayor ever elected and is now also among the youngest US mayors in history.
Earle, Arkansas—which is situated about 30 miles north of Memphis—has a population of just under 2,000 people and is 73% Black. The city was also notably the site of the Earle Race Riots of 1970.
As for Smith, according to a Facebook post made after being announced the winner of the election, he insists, “It’s time to build a better chapter of Earle, Arkansas.”
