MIA Runs Ad Featuring All White People for Juneteenth

MINNEAPOLIS—This morning the MIA (Minneapolis Institute of Arts) ran a social media ad for its Juneteenth event. However, the ad showed a group of all white people sitting on the grass watching a concert.

The Minneapolis Institute of Art quickly took down the ad and issued an apology blaming a “platform error” for the oversight.

The Juneteenth event, which takes place tomorrow evening, features Tish Jones, New Black City, Queen Drea, Christopher Harrison, and Pavielle French.

This is not the first time an ad for a Juneteenth event, a holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States, has been at the center of controversy. Last year, a Black promoter in Greenville, South Carolina advertised his Juneteenth event with banners featuring a white couple— in an effort to be more inclusive (swipe to see). The banners were taken down and the promoter offered an apology for his misstep.

“Platform error” strikes again…
