Minneapolis Police Officers Federation hopes to intervene in federal consent decree
LOCAL— The Minneapolis Police Officers Federation has filed a motion to intervene in the City’s federally mandated consent decree.
According to filings, the federation is concerned that the consent decree will negatively impact their working conditions, including pay raises and benefits.
The consent decree is the result of a U.S. Department of Justice investigation, following the police murder of George Floyd, that found the Minneapolis Police Department and the City were guilty of a pattern of racial discrimination such as using unjustified lethal force during the arrests of Black and indigenous individuals.
The consent decree was approved by the city earlier this month and still needs to be approved by a judge. It is worth noting that this is a different consent decree than the agreement put in place by the Minnesota Department of Human Rights following a similar police department probe.
Complaints from the Minneapolis Police Officers Federation come at a concerning time as the DOJ is working to push through the finalized decree before Trump, who has historically limited consent decrees, takes office next week.
