MN Senate Passes Bill with Most Protections for Rideshare Drivers in Country

MINNESOTA— The Minnesota Senate has passed a bill promising the most complete labor protections in the country for rideshare drivers.

According to the bill, which was authored by Senator Omar Fateh, Uber and Lyft drivers would receive at minimum $1.45/mile and $0.34/minute when servicing the Twin Cities area and at minimum $1.25/mile for trips beginning beyond the metro area. In addition, there will be a fee of at least $5.00 for all trips.

The passing of this historic bill comes after months of negotiation between labor unions and rideshare companies, with Lyft and Uber even threatening to leave the Minnesota market.

The bill will also provide drivers with more protections against being fired.

“It feels awesome. It was a long, hard year making this bill possible because of these drivers. They showed up every single day. They showed up to the committees; they made this a reality. Now the bill’s going to the governor’s desk. So I’m so proud,” stated Senator Fateh.
