President Biden Grants Son Pardon
President Biden has just announced that he is granting a pardon to his son, Hunter.
Hunter was scheduled to be sentenced later this month in two separate cases— one related to federal gun charges and one for federal tax evasion, the latter of which Hunter pleaded guilty to earlier this year.
Up until this point, President Biden, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, and White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, have all repeatedly denied considering a pardon for Hunter.
Political analysts suggested that, had Biden issued a pardon to his son immediately after his trial in June, it would have hurt the president’s campaign for reelection and caused the public to accuse the administration of corruption.
However, now that Biden near the end of his presidency, with no second term, pardoning his son will likely come with far less backlash.
Months ago, President Biden insisted, “I’m extremely proud of my son Hunter.” He continued, “He has overcome an addiction. He’s one of the brightest, most decent men I know, and I am satisfied that I’m not going to do anything. I said I abide by the jury decision. I will do that, and I will not pardon him.”
Today, the President announced in a statement, “I signed a pardon for my son Hunter. From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted.”
“No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son – and that is wrong,” his continued. “There has been an effort to break Hunter – who has been five and a half years sober, even in the face of unrelenting attacks and selective prosecution. In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me – and there’s no reason to believe it will stop here. Enough is enough.”
Without a pardon, Hunter was facing over 4 decades in federal prison.
