Tennessee Senate Passes Bill Allowing Teachers to Carry Concealed Handguns

Earlier today, the Tennessee Senate voted to allow public school faculty and staff to carry concealed handguns while on school premises.

The controversial bill passed 26-5 in front of an empty gallery, after the public was removed as a result of outcry from those opposed to the legislation.

Faculty members who decide to carry a gun will be responsible for covering the cost of a yearly 40-hour safety training. They must also be approved by their school director and pass both a mental health evaluation and an FBI background check.

The bill was passed almost exactly a year after a mass shooting took place at the Covenant School in Nashville, which left three adults and three children dead.

The House version of the bill was held earlier this month but, after the Senate version passed with ease, it will likely be reintroduced in the House for a full vote.
