Trump Administration Begins Dismantling Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington DC
The mural was slated for removal after U.S. Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-Ga., introduced legislation last week week calling for D.C. to either destroy it or risk losing federal funding. In addition, the bill also demanded the Black Lives Matter Plaza to be renamed Liberty Plaza.
Not even a day after the bill was introduced, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, who had previously insisted the mural would be permanent, released a statement announcing the mural would be removed. “The mural inspired millions of people and helped our city through a very painful period, but now we can’t afford to be distracted by meaningless congressional interference,” she said.
On Saturday, DOTD confirmed crews would be removing the mural on Monday (today).
