Trump Announces Rep. Matt Gaetz as Pick for Attorney General

This afternoon, Trump announced Matt Gaetz as his choice for Attorney General. Gaetz will still need to be confirmed to make the pick official.

In a social media post, Trump wrote, “Matt is a deeply gifted and tenacious attorney, trained at the William & Mary College of Law, who has distinguished himself in Congress through his focus on achieving desperately needed reform at the Department of Justice.” He is still being investigated by the House Ethics Committee.

Gaetz is a Republican member of the House of Representatives, representing Florida’s 1st congressional district.

If confirmed, Gaetz would head the agency that recently investigated him over allegations of sex trafficking and obstruction of justice. Gaetz was investigated by prosecutors for allegedly “having a sexual relationship with” [sex trafficking a] 17 year old minor.

Gaetz was never charged, but his close friend and associate, Joel Greenberg, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for federal sex trafficking.
