Ex-Cop and Convicted Killer Derek Chauvin Sentenced for Tax Fraud
On Friday, Derek Chauvin—the ex-Minneapolis police officer responsible for the death of George Floyd—was sentenced to just over a year in prison for tax evasion.
Chauvin, and his ex-wife Kellie, admitted that they had not filed their Minnesota taxes in several years and underreported their joint income by nearly $465k. The former couple owes just under $38k to the state in back taxes.
During the sentencing, Chauvin appeared virtually before a Washington County judge from prison in Arizona, where he’s already serving over two decades for the murder of George Floyd.
The judge asked why he failed to pay his taxes, to which he answered, “The true reason is some financial concerns at the time.” He continued, “I had to find significant funds from family to pay a previous year’s return and, frankly, I’ve been playing catch up ever since.”
Chauvin will not serve any additional time in jail for his 13 month tax fraud sentence, as the judge took into account time served.
Chauvin’s ex-wife, Kellie, is set to be sentenced on lesser charges in May and, according to reports, will likely receive 3 months of probation.
