Alex Newell and J. Harrison Ghee Become the First Openly Non-Binary Actors to Win Tony Awards

Congratulations to @thealexnewell and @jharrisonghee for becoming the first openly nonbinary actors to win at @thetonyawards!

Newell won Best Performance in a Featured Role in a Musical for their portrayal of Lulu in Shucked.

After accepting the award, Newell said, “Thank you for seeing me. Broadway, I should not be up here as a queer, nonbinary, fat, Black little baby from Massachusetts. And to anyone that thinks that they can’t do it, I’m going to look you dead in your face and tell you that you can do anything you put your mind to.”

Ghee won Best Leading Actor in a Musical for their portrayal of Jerry/Daphne in Some Like it Hot.

After accepting the award they said, "For every trans, nonbinary, non-gender-conforming human who ever was told you couldn’t be seen, this is for you."
