A Sixth Officer Involved in Tyre Nichols’ Death Has Been “Relieved of Duty”
Preston Hemphill was allegedly the sixth Memphis police officer involved in the beating death of Tyre Nichols. Internet news outlets have reported that he may have been responsible for tasering Nichols.
According to a spokesperson’s response to NBC News from the Memphis Police Department on Monday,
“Officer Hemphill is relieved of duty. This is an ongoing investigation. Once additional information is available, we will update our social media platforms. Hemphill was hired in 2018.”
The police department did not confirm whether Hemphill was the officer shown on video using his taser on Nichols. They also did not comment on whether Hemphill would be arrested and charged as the other five officers were.
Tyre’s step-father Rodney Wells also questioned in a recent live Good Morning America interview clip, “There was a white officer tasing my son — we don’t understand why his name wasn’t mentioned in this whole fiasco.”
