British Columbia Decriminalizes Hard Drugs

British Columbia, one of Canada’s largest provinces, has decriminalized several drugs including cocaine, heroin, morphine, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and more.

Anyone 18 years of age and older will be allowed to possess up to 2.5 grams of the drugs.

British Columbia will be testing out decriminalization for 3 years, starting this week.

During this 3 year timeframe, those stopped while carrying less than 2.5 grams of the approved drugs, will not face any consequences. However, they will be offered resources for social services and healthcare.

British Columbia has recently seen a staggering number of deaths as a result of drug overdoses. In 2022, more than 2,200 in the province died from toxic overdoses, the second most fatal year on record after 2021. The government hopes decriminalization will help end this deadly trend.

Should we try this in the U.S?
