SCOTUS Rules to Leave Trump-Era Border Restrictions in Place

In a 5-4 ruling, SCOTUS has opted to leave Title 42, Trump-era border restrictions, in place.

Title 42, which has been in effect since early 2020, gives border agents the authority to immediately refuse entry to migrants under the guise of Covid prevention. These restrictions have resulted in over 2 million migrants being turned away at the border.

Migrants and immigration advocates expected Title 42 to be overturned this week. With it remaining in place, people who’d been waiting in encampments near the southern border in the hopes of seeking asylum, must now wait likely several months longer—a crisis that has been exacerbated by the recent dangerous weather.
