Five Former Memphis Police Officers Indicted on Federal Charges in the Beating Death of Tyre Nichols

Five former Memphis police officers—Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr. and Justin Smith—have been indicted by a federal grand jury for their roles in the January beating death of Tyre Nichols.

The five ex officers were all charged with violating Nichols’ civil rights including one count each of deliberate indifference, one count of excessive force, and two counts of witness tampering.

In addition to the federal case, they have also been charged separately in Shelby County, Tennessee. Those charges include second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated kidnapping, among others.

United States Attorney General Merrick Garland released a statement after the charges were announced, “We all heard Mr. Nichols cry out for his mother and say ‘I’m just trying to go home.” The Attorney General continued, “Tyre Nichols should be alive today.”
