San Francisco Board of Supervisors Open to $5 Million Per Person Reparations Payouts

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors heard recommendations from the city’s Reparations Committee on Tuesday.

The Board appeared open to and supportive of the ideas which ranged from $5 million dollar payouts to eligible Black San Franciscans, to the elimination of individual debt, and housing in the city for the price of $1.

Many city’s across the country are beginning to discuss reparations for Black communities who are descendants of enslaved people.

There are about 50,000 Black people in the city of San Francisco. There will still need to be a process to determine eligibility.

If San Francisco goes through with their reparations plans, they could be the first major metropolitan city in the nation to do so.

Tinisch Hollins, who is the vice-chair of the African American Reparations Advisory Committee, addressed the Board, “I don’t need to impress upon you the fact that we are setting a national precedent here in San Francisco,” Hollins stated.

“What we are asking for and what we’re demanding for is a real commitment to what we need to move things forward.”

Are these recommendations enough?
