Ohio Police Release Footage from the Shooting of Pregnant Ta’Kiya Young

Blendon Township police in Ohio have released body cam footage of the fatal shooting of Ta’Kiya Young. We will not be posting the footage.

During the incident, which happened late last month, police approached 21 year old Young in the parking lot of a suburban Kroger’s and accused her of stealing alcohol.

Young, who was pregnant at the time, denied the accusations and refused to get out of her car.

In the footage, an officer can be seen approaching her window, while another stands in front of the car yelling at her to get out.

Young begins to slowly move her car forward. The officer standing in front of the car shoots through the windshield.

The car rolls to a slow stop a few feet away and officers call for medical support. Young and her unborn daughter do not survive.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting a probe into the fatal shooting.

The Blendon Township Police Department has released a press statement calling the officers involved “victims.”

In the statement, the police department explains, “When Ms. Young drove her car directly at Officer #1, striking him, Officer #1 became a victim of attempted vehicular assault.”

“When Ms. Young pulled away from Officer #2 while his hand and part of his arm was still in the driver’s side window, Officer #2 became a victim of misdemeanor assault.”

Young’s family is calling for the police involved to be arrested. In a statement the family insisted, “[it’s] undeniable that Ta’Kiya’s death was not only avoidable, but also a gross misuse of power and authority.”

The statement continued, “After seeing the video footage of her death, this is clearly a criminal act and the family demands a swift indictment of this officer for the killings of both Ta’Kiyah and her unborn daughter.”

The officer who shot Young is on leave. However, the second officer present has been returned to duty.
