The Family of Patrick Lyoya Sues City of Grand Rapids and the Then-Police Officer Who Killed Him

The family of Patrick Lyoya, who was killed in April by then-officer Christopher Schurr, is suing both the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan and the former police officer for violating Lyoya’s civil rights.

The civil lawsuit alleges that former-officer Schurr used excessive force in his exchange with Lyoya during a traffic stop.

During an altercation over the officer’s taser, the officer pinned Lyoya face down on the ground and shot him “execution” style in the back of the head.

Lyoya’s family is seeking $100 million in damages and claims the officer not only used excessive force but also racially profiled Lyoya.

Lyoya’s family is represented by civil rights attorney Ben Crump who has famously represented the families of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd.

Meanwhile, Schurr’s criminal trial for the killing of Lyoya will begin in March. He is facing second-degree murder charges.
