Latino Truckers Threaten Florida Boycott

Latino truckers and allies are threatening to boycott Florida over Governor Ron DeSantis’ most recent anti-migrant laws.

With the expiration of Title 42 last week—the Trump and Covid-era law that allowed the US to immediately refuse people crossing the border without documentation under the guise of slowing the spread of Covid—Florida has passed a new law threatening the same community.

SB 1718, which will be implemented in July, requires employers to digitally confirm the work authorization status of employees via an E-Verify system. It will also force hospitals and medical centers to collect data on patients without documentation.

In response to the law, a growing movement of Latino truckers has formed on social media. The truckers say they plan to refuse shipments coming into and out of Florida.

As truckers unite, Florida—a major import/export hub—will have to make some big decisions.
