Major Updates in Case Surrounding the Death of Tyre Nichols including a DOJ Review and Additional Footage

There have been a few major updates in the January 10th beating death of Black motorist Tyre Nichols.

A 7th former Memphis police officer has been fired for their role in Nichols’ death, while an 8th officer retired early before they were fired—as recommended by an investigation. 13 members of the police department have faced internal administrative disciplinary actions as well.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the US Department of Justice announced a review of the Memphis Police Department—which was requested by both the city’s mayor and chief of police.

Along with the review, an additional 20+ hours of footage surrounding the case, including internal investigative interviews and audio will be released. The footage was set to be made public on Wednesday, but a Shelby County Criminal Court judge has signed a court order which will delay its release.

The Justice Department will also investigate and provide national guidance around the creation and utilization of specialized units, such as Memphis’ now-disbanded Scorpion Unit—which several of the officers involved in Nichols’ death were members of.

“In the wake of Tyre Nichols’s tragic death, the Justice Department has heard from police chiefs across the country who are assessing the use of specialized units and, where used, appropriate management, oversight and accountability for such units,” stated Associate US Attorney General Vanita Gupta.

What do you hope comes from this review?
