Ex-Fort Worth police officer Aaron Dean has been convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to almost 12 years in prison for the 2019 killing of Atatiana Jefferson. The jury rejected a murder charge, which could have resulted in life in prison.
Jefferson, a 28 year old Black woman, was fatally shot by Dean after a neighbor called for a wellness check upon noticing her door was ajar.
Dean parked up the street from Jefferson’s home. He did not announce himself or knock.
Jefferson and her nephew were playing video games together when they heard an unidentified noise. They’d left the door open to ventilate the home after a mishap in the kitchen early that evening.
Upon hearing the noise, Jefferson grabbed her gun and made her way to the window. Dean yelled for her to put her hands up then shot into the window fatally wounding Jefferson. Her nephew, now 11 years old witnessed the shooting.
