Child Tax Credit Expansion Does Not Make it into Congressional Package

Less than a week after the House passed a $858,000,000,000 defense bill, the child tax credit expansion has been left out of the $1.7 trillion congressional omnibus package.

The expanded child tax credit program, which expired last December, included $3,000 per child older than 6 years of age, and $3,600 for children under 6.

The expanded credit was available to the poorest families in the country—including those with zero income, who would otherwise have been ineligible. The policy pointedly reduced poverty and hunger for children and families.

However, with the expansion not included in the new spending package, those families who need help the most will, once again, be ineligible.

Mitch McConnell boasted that the package is a “strong outcome for Republicans.”
