Minneapolis Mayor Offers Third Option for Future of 3rd Precinct Police Station

Today, in an exclusive interview with KSTP, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey offered a third option for the future home of the highly controversial 3rd Precinct Police Station—the Century Plaza building, which sits just in front of the Convention Center.

Century Plaza is technically in 1st Precinct territory, but borders the 3rd Precinct, and is significantly closer to the area it serves than the precinct’s current downtown location.

Earlier this year, a community survey was distributed asking residents to chose between rebuilding the 3rd Precinct in the same location it stood when it was burned down in the aftermath of the 2020 murder of George Floyd, or constructing a brand new, more expensive precinct building a few blocks away.

Now, according to Mayor Frey, Century Plaza could be a plausible alternative. The 1st Precinct already intends to move into Century Plaza so this scenario would involve housing both precincts in the same building as a temporary, or possibly even longterm, solution. According to Frey, this option would allow the City to continue the community engagement process and seek a permanent solution.

Mayor Frey is expected to make a formal announcement about the Century Plaza option later this evening.

What would you like to see happen with the 3rd Precinct?
