Former Mpls. Police Chief Voted onto the City’s Public Housing Authority Board
In a 7 to 6 vote on Thursday, ex-Minneapolis police chief Medaria Arradondo has been elected the newest commissioner on the city’s Public Housing Authority board.
The city council members who voted for Arradondo included Andrea Jenkins (president), Linea Palmisano (VP), Jamal Osman, Emily Koski, LaTrisha Vetaw, Michael Rainville and Lisa Goodman.
The city council members who voted against Arradondo’s appointment included Andrew Johnson, Elliott Payne, Aisha Chugthai, Jeremiah Ellison, Jason Chavez and Robin Wonsley.
Those in favor of the former MPD chief’s appointment pointed out that he grew up in public housing. While those opposed referenced the MPD’s problematic track record of violent evictions of unhoused communities in encampments during his tenure.
Many also leaned into the fact that, while he was in charge, a probe by the Minnesota Department of Human Rights exposed a “pattern or practice of race discrimination" within the MPD and the city.
Do you think former police chief Arradondo should be on the Mpls. public housing authority’s board of commissioners?
