South Carolina Bill Aims to Make Abortion Punishable by Death Penalty

The South Carolina House is considering a bill which would make execution a possible punishment for women who have an abortion.

Introduced by Representative Rob Harris (R-Spartanburg County), the bill intends to amend current state laws to extend the definition of a “person” to include unborn children (no matter the developmental stage).

According to the legislature, if passed, it would “ensure that an unborn child who is a victim of homicide [or assault] is afforded equal protection under the [laws] of the state.”

Opponents see the bill as a dangerous attack on women and reproductive healthcare.

Current South Carolina law states that murder is punishable by a mandatory minimum term of 30 years to life in prison or the death penalty.

The bill has been sponsored by 22 Republican representatives.
