Mexican President Announces Retaliatory Tariffs for the U.S.
Yesterday, President Trump announced executive orders had been signed formalizing a 25% tariff, or tax, for goods coming from Canada and Mexico, and a 10% tariff for goods coming from China.
Just hours after the announcement, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Canada would be imposing a 25% retaliatory tariff on over $155 billion in U.S. goods coming into his country.
Shortly after, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum posted a lengthy response on X, formerly Twitter, in which she stated that she had advised her economy minister to implement tariff and non-tariff measures for U.S. goods.
President Sheinbaum also insisted she does not want confrontation between countries. She called for dialogue and collaboration instead. This comes after President Trump has continually claimed that poor policies at the southern border are responsible for an influx of drugs and violent criminals coming into the U.S. President Sheinbaum has vehemently refuted his unfounded claims.
President Sheinbaum also proposed creating a working group with U.S. and Mexican leaders and health and safety officials.
Trump’s tariff’s begin on Tuesday, February 4th and will affect a long list of products from Canada, Mexico, and China including fruits, vegetables, grains, livestock, oil and gas, steel, electronics such as cell phones and computers, shoes, lumber, toys, and alcohol, among others.
