Minneapolis to pay $600k to woman who says felon and ex-Officer Derek Chauvin knelt on her neck

The City of Minneapolis will payout another settlement involving convicted killer and ex-police officer Derek Chauvin. The City has agreed to pay $600,000 to a woman who claims Chauvin used excessive force during her wrongful arrest in January 2020– just a few months before Chauvin would go on to do the same thing to George Floyd.

According to the complaint, Chauvin and a partner responded to a call that a car was stuck in the snow. When he arrived on the scene, Chauvin violently pulled Patty Day out of her minivan and threw her onto the winter pavement.

Day admits she had been drinking that evening but a judge later ruled that the officers lacked probable cause to arrest her and suppressed the results of Day’s blood alcohol test.

The complaint states Chauvin then “assumed his signature pose, pressing his knee into the subdued and handcuffed Patty’s back — just as he would later do to snuff the life out of George Floyd — and remaining that way well after Patty was controlled.” Being thrown onto the ground and knelt on left Patty with several injuries and emotional distress.

Including Day’s settlement, the City of Minneapolis has now paid out more than $36 million dollars in police misconduct cases involving Chauvin— $27 million of which went to the family of the late George Floyd.

“While no settlement can undo what Patty endured, we are grateful to have reached an agreement that holds the officers accountable for their actions,” Day’s attorney, Katie Bennett, insisted. “This case is yet another example of the critical need for justice and reform in policing.”

Chauvin is currently in a federal penitentiary in Texas, serving out his sentence for the killing of Floyd.
