Man Who Fatally Shot a BLM Protester Has Been Sentenced to 25 Years in Prison
Daniel Perry—the former Army sergeant who drove into a Black Lives Matter demonstration in Austin, Texas and fatally shot a protestor—has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.
In July of 2020, Perry shot and killed 28-year old Garrett Foster, a US Air Force veteran, from his car during a protest against police brutality following the murder of George Floyd two months earlier.
Perry drove into the crowded protest and began shooting in the direction of Foster, who was legally carrying his own rifle at the time.
Foster, who was white, approached Perry’s car and Perry fatally shot him. Perry would later allege he shot Foster in self-defense after Foster lifted his rifle, pointing it at him. However, witnesses insisted that wasn’t the case.
During the trial, evidence showed that Perry had a history of making racist jokes and comments, and has even told friends he wanted to kill protesters.
Foster leaves behind his partner, Whitney Mitchell, a quadruple amputee who depended on him for daily care.
Meanwhile, Texas Governor Greg Abbott made headlines a few weeks ago when he vowed to pardon Perry as soon as possible.
