City of Denver Settles with Protestors for $4.72 Million, Stemming from 2020 Black Lives Matter Protests

The City of Denver has settled with protestors to the tune of $4.72 million. The settlement stems from 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, in the wake of the police murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The lawsuit, which will be paid out to over 300 claimants, alleges Denver police violated the first, fourth, and fourteenth amendments of those protesting. The settlement was approved as part of Denver’s consent agenda. Among other allegations, the lawsuit claims that Denver police targeted protestors for curfew violations The suit comes after a $14 million settlement was awarded to 12 injured protestors in 2022– a case which is currently being appealed by the city. Additionally, earlier this year, seven injured protestors were awarded $1.6 million. “The settlement prevents the city from enacting any curfew enforced against those engaged in protest activity in the future,” Elizabeth Wang, attorney for the protestors, stated. “This is a win that will protect free speech in Denver for the years to come.”
