City of Birmingham to Build Micro-Shelters for the Unhoused Community

The city of Birmingham, Alabama has approved a bid to build micro-shelters for the unhoused community. The $1 million bid, which was won by rapid-response shelter building company, Pallet, will support the city’s Project Home for All. The pilot program has been approved to construct 50 tiny homes complete with heating, cooling, and basic furniture. 100 homes will eventually be built as part of the first portion of the program.

According to city leaders, the program’s application process is open now. Nonprofit organizations can apply for shelter villages to be set up in areas with many people experiencing homelessness. While the organizations must provide residents with mental health care, career, and case management programs.
