MN Secretary of State Prioritizes Restoring Voting Rights and Automatic Voter Registration
MN Secretary of State Steve Simon presented his legislative priorities earlier this week.
Simon stated that he hopes to restore voting rights to nearly 66,000 people on probation/parole after felony convictions. “Right now, we have a law that says it is safe enough for a person to live in our community but too dangerous for them to vote.” Simon continued, “It is long past time for legislators to change this unfair law to welcome Minnesotans working to rebuild their lives back into our democracy.”
Simon is also a proponent of automatic voter registration, a policy that could result in 450,000 voter registrations added/updated yearly. Eligible people would be automatically registered to vote after providing their information to various government agencies, such as DMVs.
He said, “Automatic voter registration is a win-win-win for Minnesota.” Adding, “It would allow us to expand voting access and improve the accuracy of our voting rosters while saving taxpayer dollars.”
