Six Year Old Shoots Teacher in Virginia

A six year old Richneck Elementary School student in Newport News, Virginia is in custody after bringing a handgun to his first grade classroom on Friday and shooting his teacher.

Police have stated that there was an altercation between the student and his teacher and the shooting was not accidental.

Virginia law prohibits 6 year old children from being tried as adults. If found guilty, the boy is also too young to enter the Department of Juvenile Justice.

However, a judge could revoke parental custody in this situation, placing the child with the Department of Social Services.

The 6 year old is not the youngest to bring a gun to school in recent history. In 2013, a Tennessee 5 year old discharged a gun in class.

Meanwhile, there have been three reported school shootings in the US caused by 6 year olds since 2000.

As for Friday’s incident, it is unclear where the child got the gun or who it belonged to.

The teacher is stable condition and, according to reports, is improving. No students were harmed.

What kind of reform do we need to ensure this never happens again?
