Former Louisville Police Officer Who Fatally Shot Breonna Taylor Is Policing Again

Myles Cosgrove, the former Louisville Metro police officer who fatally shot Breonna Taylor, has been hired as a police officer by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office in Kentucky.

According to reports, Cosgrove, who was fired in 2021 after using excessive force during the botched raid that killed Taylor, has been working as a police officer for the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office since last week.

During the 2020 raid of Taylor’s apartment, Cosgrove discharged his weapon 16 times, yet he never faced any criminal charges and his “peace officer certification” wasn’t revoked—meaning he wasn’t barred from policing.

Carroll County is about 52 miles north of Louisville and has a small population of about 10,000 people. Unlike the population of Louisville, which is nearly a quarter Black, Carroll County is more than 94% white and only 2% Black.

Protests are planned for Monday in reaction to Cosgrove’s hiring.
