Officers Involved in the Fatal Shooting of Jayland Walker Will Not Face Charges

Last week, a grand jury decided that eight Akron, Ohio police officers will not be charged in the fatal shooting of Jayland Walker.

25-year-old Walker was shot 46 times by officers during a traffic stop in the summer of 2022. The officers discharged their weapons a total of 94 times during the exchange.

The grand jury found that the officers involved were justified in their use of force. They originally pulled Walker over because of a busted taillight and a chase ensued.

Walker’s family, along with the @naacp, has urged the DOJ to open a federal investigation into the incident.

Following the grand jury decision, Akron’s Mayor Dan Horrigan remarked, "I would ask that during these times of tension and trauma that you turn towards one another, and not on each other.”

He continued, “As you raised your voices and seek the change that you want to see, I would ask that you do so nonviolently."

After the shooting, the eight officers were placed on leave but returned to duty three months later.

Walker’s family attorney says the family will still file a civil suit against the city.
