Kim Potter, Ex-Brooklyn Center Police Officer Who Fatally Shot Daunte Wright, Released From Prison After 16 Months

Kim Potter, the ex-Brooklyn Center police officer who fatally shot 20-year-old Daunte Wright during a traffic stop, has been released from prison after serving just 16 months behind bars.

Potter was convicted of first and second-degree manslaughter last year. She pled not guilty to both and maintained that she’d intended to reach for her Taser but accidentally grabbed her gun, shooting Wright. He’d been pulled over for an expired registration tab.

Potter, who was released early this morning, will be on supervised release for another eight months.

In Minnesota, the maximum sentence for first-degree manslaughter is 15 years in prison and $30,000 in fines. For second-degree manslaughter, it’s 10 years and $20,000 in fines. In addition to the 16 months Potter served in prison, she was issued a $1,000 fine.

How are we feeling about Potter’s release today? Is this justice?
