Somali President Pledges to Create a Somali Consulate in Minnesota

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited Minneapolis earlier this month after a trip to the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit in Washington DC.

Hassan spoke to hundreds of community members at the Minneapolis Convention Center during his evening appearance.

Minnesota is home to the largest Somali population in the United States, and the largest Somali population anywhere outside of Africa.

Hassan spoke about issues affecting the Somali community, locally, nationally, and in Somalia. He also notably promised to create a Somali consulate in Minnesota.

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and Mayor Jacob Frey were also in attendance and both took the stage to address the crowd. It’s been five years since the last time President Hassan visited Minnesota.
