No Accountability for Officers Involved in Jayland Walker’s Death

December 3, 2023

AKRON, OH— The eight Akron officers involved in the fatal 2022 shooting of Jayland Walker, will not face any accountability.

Earlier this year a special grand jury decided against charging the officers and now, an internal probe finds the officers were in compliance with department protocols and use-of-force policies.

During a traffic stop, 25 year old Black motorist, Walker, exited his vehicle while it was still moving. Between the eight officers on the scene, they shot 94 shots at Walker in less than seven seconds, hitting him 46 times.

Walker’s family is suing both the city and the department for his death.

"Everyone should be encouraged to read what the Chief of Police wrote. He said Jayland’s shooting 'was in compliance with the policies of the Akron Police Department,'" stated the Walker family’s attorney,Bobby DiCello.

“That says it all. While not unexpected, it is exactly this position that makes it critical for us to continue the lawsuit on behalf of Jayland Walker’s family. In fact, it is exactly because of this position, that we look forward to moving this case further through our justice system."
