Family of Tyre Nichols Appeals to the United Nations
The family of Tyre Nichols, who was beaten to death early last month by Memphis police, has filed an Urgent Appeal with the United Nations.
In a press statement, an attorney for the Nichols family explained, “Today, we filed an Urgent Appeal before the United Nations asking it to condemn the tragic killing of Tyre Nichols, to demand transparency from the police department, and to demand that Officer Preston Hemphill and all officers that participated in the incident are criminally charged.”
The statement continued, “The video evidence shows that all who were involved in Tyre’s death committed reprehensible acts that require international condemnation.”
According to the United Nations website, their Urgent Appeal procedures are specifically for “requesting that the Government should take appropriate measures” when ensuring a victim’s “right not to be deprived arbitrarily of his or her liberty and to fair proceedings before an independent and impartial tribunal as well as the right to life and to physical and mental integrity are respected.”
The family hopes that, at the urging of the United Nations, the state of Tennessee and government agencies at the national level will intervene in the fight for timely justice and accountability in Nichols’ brutal death.
